Grantee:Portland Art MuseumThePortlandArtMuseumisoneofthelargestmuseumsintheUSsinceitsinceptionin1892andisespeciallyrenownedforitsextensivecollectionofover3,000Japaneseprints.TheMuseum’sJapanesecollectionisalsorichinpaintinganddecorativeartsoftheEdoandMeijiperiodsandcontemporaryJapaneseceramics.Conservationobjectis“BirdsandFlowers”,apairofsix-foldscreens,whichdepictsacrane,massivetreetrunks,rockandpeonyonitsrightscreen.Onitsleftscreen,itwasdrawnaCraneandadeadtree,reeds,snowmountainsinthedistance.Thosearewell-executedfoldingscreensinthestyleofSesshuanddemonstratethelastinginfluenceofSesshuonlatergenerations.Theseareimportantartworkstoseethemaster’sapproachtobirdsandflowerssubjectslikeSesshu.Thesescreensareinurgentneedoffullconservation,astheyhavesubstantialdegradationandpriorinferiorrepairs.Atonepoint,thescreensweredamagedduringafireinformerowner’shome,aswellassubjecttowaterdamage.ThescreenshavealreadybeenexaminedandhavesometreatmentonJapaneseconservationsstudiointheUSfor4yearsplan.Conservation of “Birds and Flowers,” a pair of six-fold screens
