Grantee: The National Museum of Asian ArtTheSmithsonian’sNationalMuseumofAsianArtwasestablishedin1923,asthefirstartmuseumintheSmithsonianthathousesapproximately6,000collectionsfromtheNaraperiodtoearlyMeijiperiod,includingsomeNationalTreasures-classartworks.Thefirstgrantobjectiveis“RatsandRiceBales“byKatsushikaHokusai(1760-1849)paintedintheyearoftherabbit,1843.Neverthless,theworkcarriesamessageofgoodfortuneandawishforaplentifulyear.AworksuchasthiswouldhavebeenoneofthemanycommissionsofNewYear`spaintingsthatHokusaiwasaskedtomake–athrivingindustryinEdo–periodinJapan,wherefashionableseasonableadornmentsweredesiredamongtheurbanupperclass.Thesecondgrantobjectiveis“Yujodoingherhair”,byHishikawaMoroyasu(1685-1715).Thisrelativelyearlyimageofayujoshowsherfixingherhair,whichiskeptinthefashionoftheearly18century.TheHokusaipaintingexhibitspigmentloss,particularyintheareasofwhitepigment,whereflakingrequiredtopreventfurtherloss.TheMoroyasupaintinghasnumerousstrainsandlosses.Areaofinpaintingandoverpaintinghavedarkenedwithageandarenowvisuallydistracting.Bothofthemareplannedtorestoreforoneyear.Production of Specialty Materials for the Conservation of Hanging Scrolls with “Rats and Rice Bales” by Katsushika Hokusai, and “Yujodoing her hair ” by HishikawaMoroyasuin the collection of the National Museumof Asian Art
