Grantee: Museum RietbergZurichMuseumRietbergistheonlymuseuminSwitzerlanddedicatedentirelytoartoftheworld,itsinceptionfrom1952inZurich.ItsinternationallyrenownedcollectionscontainimportantworksfromAfrica,theAmericas,AsiaandOceania.Amongthemuseum’shighlightsareChineseporcelain,IndianminiaturespaintingsandHimalayanBuddhistart.ThemuseumhousesonlyasmallnumberofJapanesepaintings.However,theexhibitionofJapaneseartworksisholdfrequently.Theconservationobject“ahangingscrollofAizenMyo-o”wasdonatedin1966byHeinzBrasch(1905-1995),anotedexpertonJapanesepaintingsandwoodblockprints,whoadvisedthemuseum’sdirectorinbuildingitsJapanesecollection.AlthoughtherearesomepatternsofdepictionsofAizenMyo-owithitsbelongingsandalotuspedestal,thisisadoptedatraditionalpaintingmethodofAizenMyo-o.Andthishangingscroll“AizoenMyo-o”isassumedtobemadeinaroundKamakuraperiodtoNanbokuchoperiod,14thcentury,ofitsfeaturesthathaverarelycoloredexceptforhisblood-redbody,itscrestofrobeanditsdecorationdepictedwithgoldpaint.Theentirescrollshowspronouncedhorizontalcreases,causingtheliftingofthesupportingsilkandbackingpaper,aswellasflakingofpigments.Itcannolongerbedisplayed.Itisrequiredurgentrestoration.TheconservationtreatmentiscarriedoutinKyotofor2years.Conservation of the Buddhist hanging scroll “Aizen Myo-o”
