Grantee: Los Angeles County Museum of ArtTheLosAngelesCountyMuseumofArt(LACMA)isthelargestartmuseuminthewesternUnitedStates,withacollectionofnearly152,000objectsthatincludesaround5,000Japaneseartcollections.Conservationpropertyisthehangingscroll”Daruma”(1888)byKawanabeKyosai,whotrainedinbothEdo-periodukiyo-epracticesandtheorthodoxconventionsoftheKanoSchool.Itiseasytoseehow”Daruma”averylargepaintingmeasuringroughly120by184cm,withitssolidlyweighted,triangularstructureanddizzyingvortexofdramaticbrushwork,appealedtotheirtastesasartcollectors.ThismasterworkbythepainterKawanabeKyosaiwasbequeathedtoLACMA’spermanentcollectionin2024aspartoftherenownedEtsukoandJoePriceCollection.Currently,theprimarypaintingsurfaceshowspronouncedcreasing,andseveralareasatriskofcracking.Structuralissuesarealsopresentinthemountfabricalongtherods,wheretearsandsurfacedirthavedevelopedovertime.“Daruma”isshippedtoTokyofor2yearsrestoration.Conservation of “Daruma”,1888, Hanging Scroll byKawanabe Kyosai(Japan,1831-1889)
